Target score

To reach a 5 you need a composite of about 74, roughly 4 more points. For example: 6 more multiple choice, or 2 more DBQ points, or 2 more LEQ points.

Estimate only. The College Board does not publish official cut scores, and they shift each administration. AP and Advanced Placement are registered trademarks of the College Board, which does not endorse this tool.

This AP Euro score calculator works as a full AP European History score calculator: you enter how many multiple-choice questions you got right, your three short-answer scores, your DBQ score and your long essay score, and it returns a composite out of 100 plus the 1 to 5 score that composite most likely earns. The math follows the College Board's published section weights: multiple choice 40 percent, short answer 20 percent, the document-based question 25 percent and the long essay 15 percent.

Below the tool you will find the exam layout and rubric points, the exact formula with two worked examples, estimated cut scores for 2024, 2025 and 2026, the official 2026 score distribution, a table of raw points needed for a 3, 4 or 5, a study plan aimed at a 5, and an honest look at how far you can trust any predicted score.

How to Use the AP European History Score Calculator

Everything updates the moment you change a number, so you can test as many scenarios as you like. Each input has a box for typing and a slider for quick adjustments.

  • Multiple choice: the number you answered correctly out of 55. Wrong answers do not subtract anything.
  • Short answer: one box per SAQ, each scored 0 to 3. On the 2026 exam that means SAQ 1, SAQ 2 and whichever of SAQ 3 or SAQ 4 you chose.
  • DBQ: your rubric score out of 7.
  • Long essay: your rubric score out of 6.
  • Scoring curve: switch between the 2024, 2025 and 2026 estimates. The 2026 curve is the default.
  • Target planner: pick a 3, 4 or 5 and the tool tells you roughly how many more composite points you need, and how that gap translates into extra multiple-choice answers, DBQ points or LEQ points.

The panel on the right also shows how many composite points each part contributed, where your composite sits inside the score bands, and what share of real 2026 test takers scored at or above your predicted level.

AP European History Exam Format and Weighting

AP Euro runs 3 hours and 15 minutes and is fully digital: you read the sources and type every answer, including both essays, in the College Board's Bluebook app. Section I has two timed parts, and Section II holds the two essays.

What Each Item Is Worth

The raw maximums are small for the written parts, which is exactly why each essay point moves your score so much. The DBQ is scored out of 7 and the long essay out of 6, the same totals the College Board reports in its official scoring statistics.

Choices on the 2026 Exam and the 2027 Update

On the May 2026 exam, SAQ 1 and SAQ 2 were required and you picked either SAQ 3 or SAQ 4. The long essay offered three prompts from different time spans and you answered one. That is why the calculator asks for three SAQ scores and one LEQ score.

Starting with the May 2027 exam, the College Board removes those choices: all three SAQs become required, each tied to a source (a secondary text, a primary text, and a non-text source such as an image or graph) and a different period, and there is a single required long essay with a broad prompt. The College Board says the rubrics and the amount of evidence needed to earn points stay the same, so the weights and raw maximums in this calculator still apply.

Calculator Policy

Calculators are not allowed on AP European History. The College Board permits calculators only on certain math and science exams, and nothing on the Euro exam requires one: the occasional chart or table in a multiple-choice set asks you to read a trend, not compute it.

How the AP Euro Composite Score Is Calculated

Each part is turned into a fraction of its own maximum, multiplied by its weight, and the four results are added. The total is rounded to a whole number between 0 and 100.

MC points = (correct ÷ 55) × 40
SAQ points = (SAQ total ÷ 9) × 20
DBQ points = (DBQ score ÷ 7) × 25
LEQ points = (LEQ score ÷ 6) × 15
Composite = MC + SAQ + DBQ + LEQ, rounded (out of 100)

The College Board scales sections internally on a different raw total, but any scale that keeps the 40/20/25/15 proportions puts students in the same order, so a 100-point composite is the easiest way to read your standing.

Example 1: A Strong Writer Aiming for a 5

MC: 46 correct → (46 ÷ 55) × 40 = 33.45
SAQ: 3 + 2 + 3 = 8 → (8 ÷ 9) × 20 = 17.78
DBQ: 6 → (6 ÷ 7) × 25 = 21.43
LEQ: 4 → (4 ÷ 6) × 15 = 10.00
Composite = 82.66 → 83 → predicted 5 (2026 curve, 5 starts near 74)

This student could drop a few multiple-choice answers and still hold the 5. The DBQ is doing a lot of the work: a 6 out of 7 alone is worth more than 21 composite points.

Example 2: Just Short of a 4

MC: 33 correct → (33 ÷ 55) × 40 = 24.00
SAQ: 2 + 1 + 2 = 5 → (5 ÷ 9) × 20 = 11.11
DBQ: 4 → (4 ÷ 7) × 25 = 14.29
LEQ: 3 → (3 ÷ 6) × 15 = 7.50
Composite = 56.90 → 57 → predicted 3 (the 4 band starts near 58)

One point short. Two more correct multiple-choice answers (about 1.5 composite points) would cross the line, and so would a single extra DBQ point (about 3.6). Earning the sourcing point on the DBQ is often the quickest fix for a student in this spot.

AP Euro Score Cutoffs (Estimated)

The table shows the composite ranges the calculator uses by default, built for the 2026 exam. Treat them as estimates: the College Board never publishes AP cut scores. They are set so that the bands line up with the official 2026 results, where 16 percent of students earned a 5 and 74 percent earned a 3 or higher.

How the Cutoffs Shift From Year to Year

Each spring the College Board compares the new exam with earlier ones and adjusts the composite needed for each score so a 4 represents about the same level of skill regardless of how tough the questions were. That process moves the lines by a point or two in a normal year.

AP Euro also went through a bigger reset. The pass rate sat between about 53 and 60 percent from 2016 to 2023, then jumped to 71.6 percent in 2024 and has stayed above 70 percent since. Curves from before 2024 would make you look worse than you are, so the selector starts at 2024.

What Is a Good AP Euro Score?

A 3 is a passing score and earns credit or placement at many public universities. A 4 is the minimum at a lot of selective schools, and a 5 is the safest bet everywhere. In 2026 almost half of all AP Euro students earned a 4 or 5, so a 4 is a realistic goal for anyone who keeps up with the reading and practices the essays.

74%
Scored 3 or higher in 2026
49%
Earned a 4 or 5 in 2026
16%

Credit rules belong to each college, not to the College Board. Look up the exact AP European History policy for every school on your list, because the same 4 can earn a history credit at one college and only an elective at another.

Two things stand out. First, the share of 4s jumped from about 21 percent to about 33 percent between 2023 and 2024, while the share of 2s dropped by almost 9 points, which is the recalibration showing up in real results. Second, the 5 rate has crept up every year since 2024, from 13.1 percent to 16 percent in 2026.

Raw Points Needed for a 3, 4 or 5 on AP Euro

Each row is one realistic way to reach the score on the 2026 curve. The multiple-choice number is the minimum that clears the line when paired with that writing profile. Your own mix will differ, so plug your numbers into the calculator to see your personal gap.

Look at the two rows for a 5. Moving the writing from 7, 5 and 4 up to 8, 6 and 4 (two more rubric points) saves eight multiple-choice questions. That trade is why essay practice tends to pay off faster than another round of flashcards for students already scoring in the 40s on multiple choice.

How to Get a 5 on AP European History

The exam spans roughly 1450 to the present across nine units, and the College Board gives every unit the same 10 to 15 percent share. There is no safe unit to skip, so spread your review evenly and put your extra effort into the writing rubrics.

  • Lock in the DBQ points that are nearly automatic: a thesis that makes a real claim, a few sentences of context before your argument, and at least four documents used to support it. That is 4 of the 7 points before any sourcing.
  • Practice sourcing on purpose. For two documents, explain why the author's purpose, audience, point of view or historical situation matters for your argument. Many students write good essays and still miss this point.
  • Write SAQ answers as short, direct sentences that answer exactly what parts a, b and c ask, and name a specific event, person or policy in each. A vague answer earns nothing even if it is correct in spirit.
  • Build a one-page timeline per unit with dates for turning points such as the Peace of Westphalia, the Congress of Vienna, the revolutions of 1848 and the fall of the Berlin Wall. LEQ evidence and SAQ answers both depend on chronology.
  • Train for source-based multiple choice. The questions come in sets tied to a text, image or map, so practice reading the source first and asking what it reveals about its period.
  • Practice in Bluebook. Typing two essays in 100 minutes is a different skill from handwriting them, and the College Board's practice tests let you rehearse the timing.
  • Score your own practice essays with the official rubrics, then compare with the College Board's sample responses and commentary to see where graders draw the line.
  • Know your strongest eras, and for the 2027 exam plan to write the single required long essay using evidence from whatever period you know best, since the new prompts are built to allow that.

Where the easy points hide

A DBQ point is worth about 3.6 composite points and an LEQ point about 2.5, while a multiple-choice answer is worth about 0.7. Going from a 4 to a 6 on the DBQ adds more than seven composite points, the same as about ten extra multiple-choice questions.

How Accurate Is This AP Euro Score Calculator?

The composite math is exact for the inputs you give it, because the section weights and point values are official. The weak spots are elsewhere:

  • Cut scores are estimates. The College Board does not release them, so a composite within two or three points of a line could land on either side.
  • Self-scored essays drift. Students tend to give themselves the complexity or sourcing point that a trained reader would not. If you are unsure, enter the lower number.
  • Practice tests vary in difficulty. A released exam from a different year may be easier or harder than the one you will take.
  • The College Board's internal scaling uses its own raw totals and rounding, so tiny differences from this 100-point version are possible near a boundary.

Use the predicted score as a planning tool. If you are comfortably inside a band, you are probably safe there. If you are within a couple of points of the line, assume you could go either way and keep working on the part with the best return.

When Is the AP Euro Exam and When Do Scores Come Out?

AP exams are given over two weeks in early to mid May. The 2026 AP European History exam was held on Monday, May 4, 2026, with a late-testing date on May 18, and scores were released online in July 2026. The College Board lists the 2027 exam for Tuesday, May 4, 2027, but check the official AP exam schedule for the confirmed time and any changes before you plan around it.

Scores normally appear in your College Board account in early July. For what to expect on release day, read when AP scores come out.

Taking more than one history exam?

The APUSH and AP World History exams use the same four-part layout, the same 40/20/25/15 weights and the same DBQ and LEQ rubrics, so your practice transfers directly. Compare how hard each exam is in the easiest and hardest AP exams guide.

Frequently asked questions

How is the AP European History exam scored?

Your multiple choice counts for 40 percent, the three short-answer questions for 20 percent, the DBQ for 25 percent and the long essay for 15 percent. Each part is scaled to its weight, the parts are combined into a composite, and the College Board converts that composite to a score from 1 to 5 using cut points it sets each year after the exam.

What composite score do you need for a 5 on AP Euro?

Based on the 2026 results, a 5 most likely starts at a composite around 74 out of 100. One way to get there is 42 multiple-choice answers right, 7 of 9 on the short answers, 5 of 7 on the DBQ and 4 of 6 on the long essay. These cut points are estimates, because the College Board does not publish them.

Is a 3 on AP Euro good?

Yes. A 3 is a passing score and means qualified in College Board terms. Many public universities award credit or placement for a 3, though more selective schools often want a 4 or 5. In 2026, 74 percent of AP European History students scored 3 or higher, so a 3 puts you with most test takers but not ahead of them.

What percent of students get a 5 on AP European History?

In 2026, 16 percent of students earned a 5, according to the College Board. That was up from 14.0 percent in 2025 and 13.1 percent in 2024. Another 33 percent earned a 4 in 2026, so close to half of all test takers scored 4 or higher.

How many points is the AP Euro DBQ worth?

The DBQ is scored out of 7 points: 1 for the thesis, 1 for contextualization, 3 for evidence (using the documents and adding outside evidence) and 2 for analysis and reasoning, which covers sourcing and complexity. It counts for 25 percent of the exam, so each DBQ point is worth roughly 3.6 points on a 100-point composite.

Is AP Euro harder than APUSH?

The results are close. Both exams use the same format and rubrics, and in 2024 and 2025 both had pass rates in the low 70s, after both were recalibrated. The real difference is content: Euro covers more countries and a longer span of intellectual and religious history.

Do you get a choice of questions on the AP Euro exam?

On the 2026 exam, yes: you chose between SAQ 3 and SAQ 4 and picked one of three long essay prompts. From May 2027 the College Board removes those choices. All three short-answer questions become required, and there is one required long essay with a broad prompt that lets you choose the evidence you use.

Can you use a calculator on AP European History?

No. Calculators are only permitted on specific AP math and science exams, and AP European History is not one of them. You will not need one, since the charts and tables that appear in multiple-choice sets ask you to interpret trends, not perform calculations.

Is the AP Euro exam digital?

Yes. AP European History is fully digital. You take the whole exam, including the DBQ and the long essay, in the College Board's Bluebook app, and your answers are submitted automatically when time runs out. Practicing typed essays under time before exam day is a good idea.

How accurate are AP Euro score calculators?

The weighting is official, so the composite is exact for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 conversion is an estimate, because cut scores are never published and shift a little each year. Predictions are most reliable when your composite is several points inside a band and least reliable within two or three points of a line.

When do AP European History scores come out?

AP scores are released online in July, a few weeks after the May exams. The 2026 scores came out in July 2026. Check the College Board's score release page for the exact date in your year, and make sure you can sign in to your College Board account before release day.
