This AP CSA score calculator estimates your AP Computer Science A result from a practice test written to the current exam. Enter how many of the 42 multiple-choice questions you got right and your rubric score on each of the four free-response coding questions. The tool weights multiple choice at 55 percent and free response at 45 percent, builds a composite out of 100, and maps it to a predicted 1 to 5.

AP CSA changed for the 2025-26 school year, so many older calculators and practice books still describe a format that no longer exists. This page explains exactly what changed, shows the new exam structure and point values, works through the scoring math, and gives estimated cutoffs, the official 2026 distribution, the points you need for each score, and a study plan for the four new question types.

What Changed on the AP Computer Science A Exam in 2026

The College Board revised AP Computer Science A starting in fall 2025, and the May 2026 exam was the first one built on the new Course and Exam Description. The language is still Java and the exam is still 3 hours with two 90-minute sections, but the question counts, weights, free-response tasks and course content all moved.

AP Computer Science A: old exam (through May 2025) vs revised exam (from May 2026).

Three changes matter most for scoring. First, multiple choice now counts for more of your grade (55 percent instead of 50). Second, the four free-response questions are no longer worth the same: two are worth 7 points, one 5 and one 6. Third, the old standalone array question is gone. Arrays still appear, but the third free-response question now focuses on analyzing data stored in an ArrayList.

On the content side, the College Board consolidated the old ten units into four, removed the inheritance unit, and added topics on text files, data sets and the responsible use of computing, including artificial intelligence. If your practice material asks you to write a subclass or override a superclass method, it was written for the old course.

Using an older practice test? AP Central itself notes that pre-2026 free-response questions do not completely align with the current exam. Skip inheritance questions, and convert each old 9-point score to a fraction before entering it (for example, 6 of 9 on an old 2D array question is about 4 of 6 on the new one).

How to Use This AP Computer Science A Score Calculator

  • Multiple choice correct (0 to 42): count your right answers only. Wrong answers are not penalized.
  • Q1 Methods and Control Structures (0 to 7): Part A is worth 4 points and Part B 3 points.
  • Q2 Class Design (0 to 7): the whole class, from header and instance variables to the constructor and method.
  • Q3 Data Analysis with ArrayList (0 to 5) and Q4 2D Array (0 to 6).
  • Curve year: 2026 is the default and the only year of the revised exam. The 2024 and 2025 buttons apply estimates from the old format to your new-format composite, which is useful as a rough sensitivity check but not as a prediction.
  • Target planner: choose a 3, 4 or 5 to see the gap in composite points, multiple-choice questions and free-response points.

Multiple-choice questions are a mix of single questions and sets that share a code segment. They ask you to trace output from given values, choose code that produces a stated result, and judge whether code is correct or equivalent to another version. The sample questions in the revised course description use four answer choices, A to D.

QuestionTaskPointsShare of total exam
1Methods and Control Structures: Part A uses loops and conditionals with calls to a given class (4); Part B requires String methods (3)712.6%
2Class Design: write a complete class from a specification table712.6%
3Data Analysis with ArrayList: write one method that analyzes data in an ArrayList59.0%
42D Array: write one method that traverses or manipulates a 2D array610.8%
AP CSA free-response questions and point values (CED and 2026 scoring guidelines).

The 2026 exam followed this pattern closely: Q1 built a user account class with a constructor and a method that shortened a name with String methods, Q2 asked for a complete Bottle class, Q3 analyzed course attendance records stored in an ArrayList, and Q4 totaled points across one row of a game board stored as a 2D array.

Calculator and Reference Policy

No calculator is allowed on AP Computer Science A, unless a student has an approved accommodation. You do get the Java Quick Reference, which lists the String, Math, Integer, Double, ArrayList and other library methods the exam may use. It is built into Bluebook, and schools may also print it. Learn what is on it so you do not waste time looking things up.

How the AP CSA Composite Score Is Calculated

Multiple choice = (correct ÷ 42) × 55
Free response = (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ÷ 25 × 45
Composite = multiple choice + free response, rounded (0 to 100)

Each multiple-choice question is worth about 1.31 composite points and each free-response rubric point about 1.8. The College Board has not described any extra per-question weighting inside Section II, so this calculator adds the raw rubric points, which makes Q1 and Q2 (7 points each) the most valuable questions on the exam.

Worked Example 1: A Clear 5

Inputs: 35 of 42 multiple choice; FRQs 6 + 6 + 4 + 5 = 21 of 25
Multiple choice = (35 ÷ 42) × 55 = 45.8
Free response = (21 ÷ 25) × 45 = 37.8
Composite = 45.8 + 37.8 = 83.6 → 84 → AP score 5

84 is nine points above the estimated 2026 line for a 5. Losing one point on each free-response question is still comfortably a 5 when multiple choice is this strong.

Worked Example 2: Solid 4, Weak Spot in Class Design

Inputs: 28 of 42 multiple choice; FRQs 4 + 5 + 2 + 3 = 14 of 25
Multiple choice = (28 ÷ 42) × 55 = 36.7
Free response = (14 ÷ 25) × 45 = 25.2
Composite = 36.7 + 25.2 = 61.9 → 62 → AP score 4

A 4 with a three-point cushion over the estimated cutoff of 59. To reach 75 for a 5, this student needs about 13 more composite points, for example 8 more free-response points (each adds 1.8) or a mix such as 5 more multiple-choice answers and 4 more free-response points.

Worked Example 3: Missing a 3 by One Point

Inputs: 24 of 42 multiple choice; FRQs 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 = 8 of 25
Multiple choice = (24 ÷ 42) × 55 = 31.4
Free response = (8 ÷ 25) × 45 = 14.4
Composite = 31.4 + 14.4 = 45.8 → 46 → AP score 2

One composite point short of a 3. Free-response rubrics award points for individual pieces of an answer, such as a correct loop header or a correct method call, so writing a partial answer to every question is the quickest way to pick up the few points this student is missing. Leaving a question blank throws away points you could have earned.

How Cutoffs Shift, and Why 2026 Is Different

Every AP exam is equated each year, so the composite needed for a given score rises or falls slightly with the difficulty of that year's questions. AP CSA adds a second source of movement in 2026: the weights and the free-response point scale changed, so cut scores from the old exam cannot be carried over exactly. This calculator keeps 2024 and 2025 estimates only so you can see how sensitive your score is to the cutoffs.

What Do You Need for a 3, 4 or 5 on AP CSA?

Each cell is the minimum number of multiple-choice questions (out of 42) you need for that score on the 2026 estimated curve, given your free-response total.

Free response pulls a lot of weight here. Going from 12 to 20 free-response points lowers the multiple-choice requirement for a 5 from 41 to 30, which is the difference between a near-perfect Section I and a comfortable one.

What Is a Good AP Computer Science A Score?

A 3 is a pass, a 4 is strong, and a 5 is what computer science departments at selective universities most often look for before granting credit for an introductory programming course. On the first revised exam in 2026, about half of all students scored a 4 or 5 and a quarter earned the top score.

AP Computer Science A score distributions (College Board). 2026 is the first revised exam; figures are rounded.

AP CSA has an unusual shape: a large share of 5s and an equally large share of 1s, with relatively few 2s. It suggests a divide between students who can write working Java and those who cannot yet. The first revised exam kept that shape. The share of 1s (23 percent) and 5s (25 percent) barely moved, while 4s rose to 26 percent and 3s fell to 15 percent, so more of the middle group moved up a band.

3Class Creation10 to 18%
4Data Collections30 to 40%
AP CSA units and multiple-choice exam weighting (revised CED).

Units 2 and 4 together make up more than half of the multiple choice, and they are also the core of free-response questions 1, 3 and 4. A practical plan:

  • Trace code by hand every day. Most multiple-choice questions give you a code segment and ask what it prints or what a variable holds. Write out a trace table for loops, especially nested loops and loops that change a list while traversing it.
  • Practice String methods until they are automatic: substring, indexOf, length, equals and compareTo. Part B of the first free-response question requires them, and off-by-one errors in substring calls are a common way to lose points.
  • For Class Design, rehearse the full skeleton: public class header, private instance variables, a constructor that initializes every variable, and the required methods with correct return types. These structural pieces are easy rubric points.
  • For the ArrayList question, practice filtering, counting, finding a maximum and removing elements safely (traverse backward, or adjust the index after a remove).
  • For 2D arrays, drill row-major and column-major traversals, a single row or column, and neighbors of a cell with bounds checks. The 2026 question summed one row of a board.
  • Type your practice answers instead of handwriting them. The whole exam is in Bluebook, so get used to writing Java in a plain editor with no autocomplete and no compiler.
  • Use the methods given in the question. The directions warn that rewriting logic a provided method already handles may cost credit, and changing a provided method header (its number or type of parameters) costs algorithm points.
  • Do not panic over syntax. The 2026 scoring guidelines ignore many minor slips, like a missing semicolon or confusing length with size, as long as your intent is clear. Logic and structure are what earn points.
  • Write something for every part. Partial answers earn partial credit, and a reasonable attempt at a loop or method call can earn a point even if the full method is wrong.
  • Take timed practice sections: about 2 minutes per multiple-choice question, and about 22 minutes per free-response question.

How Accurate Is This AP CSA Calculator?

The weights (55 and 45 percent) and point values (7, 7, 5 and 6) come straight from the College Board, so the composite is computed the right way. Two things add uncertainty. Cut scores are never published, and with only one administration of the revised exam the estimates rest on less history than other subjects. And self-scoring code is tricky. Under the 2026 scoring guidelines, an algorithm point is withheld when a required step is missing, steps are assembled in the wrong order, data passed in as a parameter is changed, or a provided method header is rewritten with different parameters. Many small slips, such as a missing semicolon or an undeclared local variable, are ignored. Grade your practice answers with those rules, not by whether the code would compile.

If your predicted composite is within 3 points of a boundary, plan as if you could land on either side. If your practice material predates 2026, also expect the prediction to be rougher.

When Is the AP CSA Exam and When Are Scores Released?

AP Computer Science A is held during the AP exam window in May. Scores are released in early July; the first revised exam's results came out in early July 2026. The College Board already lists a May 2027 date for AP CSA, but dates can change, so confirm on the official AP exam schedule and with your AP coordinator.

Frequently asked questions

Did the AP Computer Science A exam change in 2026?

Yes. The course was revised for 2025-26 and the May 2026 exam was the first new version. Multiple choice went from 40 questions at 50 percent to 42 questions at 55 percent, free response went from 50 to 45 percent, and the four free-response questions are now worth 7, 7, 5 and 6 points instead of 9 each. The inheritance unit was removed.

How is the AP CSA exam scored?

Your correct multiple-choice answers out of 42 count for 55 percent and your free-response points out of 25 count for 45 percent. The two are combined into a composite, and the College Board converts the composite to a 1 to 5 using cut scores it does not publish. This calculator estimates those cut scores.

What are the four AP CSA free-response questions?

Question 1 is Methods and Control Structures (7 points, with a part that requires String methods). Question 2 is Class Design (7 points). Question 3 is Data Analysis with ArrayList (5 points). Question 4 is 2D Array (6 points). All four are written in Java and typed in Bluebook.

What score do you need to get a 5 on AP CSA?

This calculator estimates that a 5 on the 2026 exam started at a composite of about 75 out of 100. That is roughly 35 of 42 multiple choice with 16 of 25 free-response points, or 30 multiple choice with 20 free-response points. Since official cut scores are not released, aim a little higher.

What was the AP Computer Science A pass rate in 2026?

The College Board reported that 66 percent of students scored 3 or higher on the 2026 AP CSA exam: 25 percent earned a 5, 26 percent a 4 and 15 percent a 3. Another 23 percent received a 1, which is in line with CSA's usual pattern of many 5s and many 1s.

Is AP CSA on paper or digital?

Fully digital. Both the multiple-choice and free-response sections are taken in the Bluebook app, and your free-response code is typed. Bluebook includes the Java Quick Reference. You can use scratch paper for planning, but only answers entered in the app are scored.

Can you use a calculator on AP Computer Science A?

No. The College Board's calculator policy states that calculators are not allowed on AP Computer Science A unless a student has an approved accommodation. Any arithmetic in the questions is simple enough to do by hand or by tracing the code.

Is inheritance still on the AP CSA exam?

No. The revised course removed the inheritance unit, so you will not be asked to write subclasses or override superclass methods. Older practice exams and review books may still include inheritance questions; you can skip them when preparing for the current exam.

Can I use old AP CSA practice tests?

Yes, with care. Old multiple-choice questions still build tracing skills, but skip any on inheritance and remember the old test had 40 questions, not 42. For old free-response questions, convert your score to a fraction of 9 and scale it to the new point value before entering it in this calculator.

Is AP CSA hard?

It is demanding if you have never programmed, because you must write correct Java under time pressure without a compiler. Results are split: in 2026 about half of students scored a 4 or 5, but 23 percent scored a 1. Regular coding practice, not cramming, is what separates the two groups.

Is AP CSA the same as AP CSP?

No. AP Computer Science A is a Java programming course with a coding exam. AP Computer Science Principles is a broader introduction to computing with a create performance task and a multiple-choice exam. They have different formats and are scored differently, so use a separate calculator for each.
