AP Physics 2 covers the second half of algebra-based physics: thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, optics, waves and modern physics. This calculator estimates your score on the exam. Enter your multiple-choice total and your four free-response scores, and it converts them into a composite out of 100 using the official 50/50 split, then reads that composite against estimated cutoffs for 2025 or 2026.
Physics 2 got a new exam in May 2025, sharing a common blueprint with Physics 1 and both Physics C exams. That makes older curves unusable, and it also means much of the advice online is stale. This page walks through the current format, how Physics 2 differs from Physics 1 and Physics C, the scoring math with examples, estimated cutoffs, official results, and a study plan built around the topics that only Physics 2 tests.
Using the AP Physics 2 Calculator
Start by picking the exam format. The 2025 and 2026 exams had 40 multiple-choice questions, and released practice from those years uses that count; the May 2027 exam has 42. Then enter your correct answers and your score on each free-response question: Q1 out of 10, Q2 out of 12, Q3 out of 10 and Q4 out of 8.
The result panel shows your composite, your estimated AP score, how far you are from the next band and how your result compares with the official distribution for the curve year you chose. The planner at the bottom works backward from a target score and tells you how many more answers or free-response points would close the gap.
AP Physics 2 Exam Structure
The exam lasts 3 hours and is hybrid digital. Multiple-choice questions are answered in the Bluebook app; free-response prompts are shown in Bluebook but you write your answers by hand in a paper booklet, which matters for diagrams, ray sketches and circuit drawings.
| Section | What you answer | Time in 2025 and 2026 | Time from May 2027 | Share of score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I: Multiple choice | 40 questions (42 from 2027), discrete and in sets | 80 min | 85 min | 50% |
| II: Free response | 4 questions, 40 raw points | 100 min | 95 min | 50% |
| Question | Type | Max points | 2025 average | Average as a percent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Mathematical Routines | 10 | 5.32 | 53% |
| Q2 | Translation Between Representations | 12 | 8.12 | 68% |
| Q3 | Experimental Design and Analysis | 10 | 7.22 | 72% |
| Q4 | Qualitative/Quantitative Translation | 8 | 5.42 | 68% |
| All four | 40 | 26.08 | 65% |
Physics 2 students scored well on the free response in 2025: the average total of about 26 of 40 is roughly six points higher than the Physics 1 average on the same question types. The weak spot was Mathematical Routines, where the average was barely over half. That pattern shapes the study advice later on this page.
Units and Weighting
Physics 2 picks up the unit numbering where Physics 1 ends. The College Board lists these units and multiple-choice weights:
| Unit | Topic | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Thermodynamics | 15 to 18% |
| 10 | Electric Force, Field, and Potential | 15 to 18% |
| 11 | Electric Circuits | 15 to 18% |
| 12 | Magnetism and Electromagnetism | 12 to 15% |
| 13 | Geometric Optics | 12 to 15% |
| 14 | Waves, Sound, and Physical Optics | 12 to 15% |
| 15 | Modern Physics | 12 to 15% |
No single unit dominates. Electricity in its three forms (fields and potential, circuits, magnetism) makes up a bit under half of the exam, but optics, waves and modern physics together are another large block that students often leave until the last weeks.
Calculators and Reference Sheets
You can use a four-function, scientific or graphing calculator on both sections, or the Desmos calculators built into Bluebook. Equation sheets and reference tables are supplied for the whole exam.
AP Physics 1 vs Physics 2 vs Physics C
All four AP Physics exams now share one blueprint: half multiple choice, half free response, the same four free-response question types and a 3-hour sitting. What separates them is content and math level.
| Exam | Math level | Main content | Usual preparation | 2026: 3 or higher | 2026: scored 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics 1 | Algebra | Motion, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations, fluids | Geometry, taking Algebra II | 68% | 19% |
| Physics 2 | Algebra and trigonometry | Thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, optics, waves, modern physics | Physics 1 or similar, precalculus | 72% | 20% |
| Physics C: Mechanics | Calculus | Mechanics, treated with derivatives and integrals | Calculus, taken or concurrent | 72% | 20% |
| Physics C: E&M | Calculus | Electricity and magnetism with calculus | Usually after C: Mechanics | 75% | 24% |
Physics 2 and Physics C: E&M overlap on electric fields, circuits and magnetism, but Physics C works those topics with calculus, while Physics 2 adds thermodynamics, optics and modern physics, which neither C exam covers. Students heading into engineering often choose C because many engineering schools prefer it for credit; students in life sciences or pre-health tracks often find Physics 2 a better fit, since the algebra-based college sequence is the one many of those programs require. Check how your target colleges treat each exam before deciding.
A practical note on pass rates: Physics 2 posts higher numbers than Physics 1 largely because of who takes it. About 24,000 students sat Physics 2 in 2025, compared with roughly 174,000 for Physics 1, and most Physics 2 students have already finished a year of physics.
How the AP Physics 2 Composite Is Calculated
On the 40-question format every raw point, from either section, is worth 1.25 composite points. You can therefore add your correct answers and your free-response points into one total out of 80 and multiply by 1.25. On the 2027 format, a multiple-choice answer is worth about 1.19 points instead.
Example: One Point Short of a 5
One more correct answer (28 of 40) gives 35.00 + 40.00 = 75, the first composite in the estimated 5 band. On a borderline result like this, small things decide the outcome: one careless sign error on a field problem, or one missing label on a ray diagram.
Example: Passing With Room to Spare
This student has free-response scores close to the 2025 national averages and gets half the multiple choice right. That is a solid 3. Reaching a 4 needs 6 more composite points, about 5 extra raw points, which is a realistic goal for the final month of review.
Example: The 2027 Format
With 31 of 42 instead, the composite drops to 74.40, which rounds to 74 and a 4. With two extra questions on the 2027 exam, you need slightly more correct answers to reach the same composite.
AP Physics 2 Composite Score Bands (Estimated)
The bands below are the default 2026 estimates in the calculator. They are not College Board figures; they are fitted to the official 2026 distribution and to how students performed on the 2025 free response.
Estimates only. The 2025 estimate is 5 at 76, 4 at 61, 3 at 49 and 2 at 36. Actual cutoffs are set by the College Board each year and are not published.
Compared with Physics 1, the Physics 2 bands sit higher, especially for a 3. That does not mean the exam is graded more harshly. Cut scores are set by what a qualified student can do on that exam, and Physics 2 test takers simply score more raw points on average, so the composite needed at each level is higher.
The bands also shift a little from year to year because each exam form differs in difficulty. The College Board equates forms so that a 4 means the same thing every year. Pre-2025 Physics 2 curves are left out of the tool because that exam had a different free-response structure, so its composite scale does not line up with the current one.
AP Physics 2 Score Distribution
In 2026, 72 percent of Physics 2 students earned a 3 or higher and 20 percent earned a 5. The most common single score was a 4.
| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher | Mean | Students |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 20% | 29% | 23% | 21% | 7% | 72% | Not yet published | Not yet published |
| 2025 | 21.8% | 28.8% | 22.0% | 20.2% | 7.2% | 72.6% | 3.38 | 24,211 |
| 2024 (old format) | 19.1% | 18.0% | 33.4% | 22.9% | 6.6% | 70.5% | 3.20 | 22,804 |
| 2023 (old format) | 16.5% | 18.5% | 34.9% | 23.8% | 6.4% | 69.8% | 3.15 | 20,453 |
| 2022 (old format) | 16.3% | 18.1% | 35.3% | 24.1% | 6.3% | 69.7% | 3.14 | 17,842 |
The pass rate barely moved with the redesign, but the shape changed. Under the old exam a 3 was by far the most common result, at about a third of students. Since 2025, about 29 percent earn a 4 and only about 22 percent earn a 3, so the middle of the distribution moved up one level. The mean rose from 3.20 in 2024 to 3.38 in 2025.
What Counts as a Good Physics 2 Score?
A 3 passes and often earns credit for the second semester of college algebra-based physics. A 4 or 5 is the safer target if you want credit at selective schools, or if you hope to use the score to skip a physics course in a science major. Since half of test takers score 4 or 5, a 4 is a strong result but not a rare one.
Raw Points Needed for Each AP Physics 2 Score
| Goal | Composite | Total on 40 MC + 40 FRQ | Example (40 MC format) | Example (42 MC format) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 75+ | 60 of 80 | 30 MC + 30 FRQ | 32 MC + 30 FRQ |
| 4 | 61+ | 49 of 80 | 24 MC + 25 FRQ | 25 MC + 25 FRQ |
| 3 | 49+ | 39 of 80 | 19 MC + 20 FRQ | 20 MC + 20 FRQ |
If you can reproduce the 2025 free-response average of about 26 points, you need roughly 13 multiple-choice answers for a 3, 23 for a 4 and 34 for a 5 on the 40-question format. The calculator does this arithmetic for any combination.
How to Score a 5 on AP Physics 2
Physics 2 rewards breadth. Seven units carry similar weight, so a weak unit costs you no matter which one it is. Use these priorities:
- Target Mathematical Routines. It had the lowest 2025 average at about 53 percent. Practice multi-step derivations with symbols, such as finding the potential at a point from several charges or the current in one branch of a circuit, and keep your algebra clean until the last line.
- Master circuits completely. Series and parallel reduction, Kirchhoff's rules, power and RC behavior show up in both sections. Redraw messy circuits before you start calculating.
- Use process diagrams for thermodynamics. For PV graphs, know which quantity is zero for each process (no heat for adiabatic, no work for constant volume, no change in internal energy for isothermal) and apply the first law with consistent signs.
- Draw principal rays for every optics problem. Locate images with a ray diagram first, then confirm with the thin lens or mirror equation, paying attention to sign conventions for virtual images.
- Do not leave modern physics until May. Photon energy, the photoelectric effect, energy levels, nuclear decay and mass-energy are 12 to 15 percent of the exam and are among the most formulaic points available.
- Connect fields, forces and potential. Many multiple-choice sets ask you to move from a field diagram to a force or from equipotential lines to the work done, so practice those translations in both directions.
- Grade practice free responses with AP Central rubrics, then enter the points here. Watching your projected composite move is a good check on whether a study week actually helped.
Physics 1 skills still matter
Physics 2 regularly mixes in forces, energy and motion from Physics 1, for example a charged particle accelerating through a potential difference or a wire experiencing a magnetic force. A quick review of Physics 1 mechanics in the spring pays off on both sections.
How Reliable Is This Estimate?
The composite math matches the official weighting exactly, so if your inputs are right, your composite is right. The 1 to 5 conversion is an estimate, for three reasons.
- The College Board does not publish raw-to-AP conversions for the redesigned Physics 2 exam, so the bands here are modeled from official distributions and scoring statistics.
- Physics 2 has a small test population, about 24,000 students, so one difficult free-response question can move the real cutoffs more than on a larger exam.
- Self-grading is optimistic. Points for justifications and diagram details are easy to award yourself and easy to lose in the real reading.
Treat a result more than four composite points inside a band as dependable and anything closer to a boundary as a range of two possible scores.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my AP Physics 2 score?
Divide your correct multiple-choice answers by 40 (or 42 on the 2027 format) and multiply by 50. Add your four free-response scores, divide by 40 and multiply by 50. The sum, rounded, is your composite out of 100. On the 2026 estimate, 75 or more is a 5, 61 to 74 a 4 and 49 to 60 a 3.
Is AP Physics 2 harder than AP Physics 1?
The content is broader and more abstract, especially fields, potential and modern physics, but the results are better: 72 percent passed in 2026 against 68 percent for Physics 1. The gap mostly reflects who takes each exam. Physics 2 students usually have a year of physics behind them, while Physics 1 is often a first physics course.
Should I take AP Physics 2 or AP Physics C?
Choose Physics C if you are comfortable with calculus and plan to study engineering or physics, since many of those programs prefer C credit. Choose Physics 2 if you want thermodynamics, optics and modern physics, or if your intended major uses the algebra-based college sequence. Check credit policies at the colleges you are considering.
Can I take AP Physics 2 without taking Physics 1?
Yes. AP exams have no formal prerequisites, and any student can register. The College Board recommends AP Physics 1 or a comparable introductory physics course first, plus precalculus taken earlier or at the same time, because Physics 2 builds on forces, energy and motion.
What is the hardest free-response question on AP Physics 2?
Based on the 2025 scoring statistics, Mathematical Routines (Q1) was the hardest, with an average of 5.32 out of 10. The experimental design question (Q3) had the highest average at 7.22 of 10. Results vary by year and topic, but symbolic derivation is consistently where students drop points.
What percent do you need to pass AP Physics 2?
On the 2026 estimate, a 3 starts at a composite of 49, which is 39 of the 80 raw points on the 40-question format, just under half. That estimate is not an official College Board number and can shift by a point or two from year to year.
Does AP Physics 2 cover modern physics?
Yes. Unit 15, Modern Physics, makes up 12 to 15 percent of the exam. It includes topics such as photons and the photoelectric effect, atomic energy levels, nuclear decay and mass-energy equivalence. Neither Physics C exam covers this material, which is one of the main differences between the courses.
Is AP Physics 2 digital?
It is a hybrid digital exam. You answer the multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app and see the free-response prompts there too, but you write your free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet. Practice drawing ray diagrams, circuit sketches and graphs on paper, not only on a screen.
Why are old AP Physics 2 curves not included?
Before 2025 the Physics 2 exam had a different section layout and different free-response tasks. A composite earned on the current exam cannot be read on the old scale. The calculator therefore offers only the 2025 and 2026 estimates, and the trends table marks older years as a different format.
Do colleges give credit for AP Physics 2?
Many do, usually for the second semester of an algebra-based physics sequence, and a 4 or 5 is often required at selective schools. Engineering programs may give only elective credit because they require calculus-based physics. Search the College Board credit policy tool or each college's AP page for exact rules.
