To reach a 5 you need a composite of about 57, roughly 4 more points. For example: 4 more multiple choice correct, or 5 more free-response points.
Estimate only. The College Board does not publish official cut scores, and they shift each administration. AP and Advanced Placement are registered trademarks of the College Board, which does not endorse this tool.
Use this AP Calc BC score calculator after a practice exam to see where you stand. Enter the number of multiple choice questions you got right and your points on each of the six free response questions. The tool scales both halves to the College Board's 50/50 weighting, adds them into a composite out of 100 and shows the AP score that composite most likely earns.
AP Calculus BC has a reputation as a hard course with generous results: in 2026, 46 percent of test takers earned a 5. The reason is the cutoffs. A 5 on BC takes a smaller share of the points than a 5 on AB. Below you will find the May 2027 exam layout, the formula with worked examples, estimated cutoffs, official distributions, the raw points needed for each score, and a plain explanation of the Calculus AB subscore every BC student receives.
How to Use the AP Calculus BC Score Calculator
- Choose the exam format first. May 2027 uses 42 multiple choice questions; released exams and the May 2026 exam used 45. The switch changes only the multiple choice maximum.
- Type your correct multiple choice answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so incorrect and blank count the same.
- Enter each free response question from 0 to 9, ideally after grading it against the official scoring guidelines.
- Flip between the 2024, 2025 and 2026 curve estimates to see whether your score holds across years.
- Set a target of 3, 4 or 5 in the planner to see how many more multiple choice answers or free response points would get you there.
The tool predicts your main BC score only. It does not predict the AB subscore, for reasons explained in the AB subscore section below.
AP Calculus BC Exam Structure
BC shares its layout with AB. For the May 2027 exam the College Board trimmed the multiple choice section and its timing while leaving course content and the free response section unchanged. The exam is hybrid digital: questions appear in Bluebook, multiple choice is answered on screen, and free response work is handwritten in a paper booklet.
| Section | Format | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| I, Part A | 29 multiple choice, no calculator | 62 min | 35% |
| I, Part B | 13 multiple choice, graphing calculator required for some | 38 min | 15% |
| II, Part A | 2 free response, graphing calculator required | 30 min | 16.7% |
| II, Part B | 4 free response, no calculator | 60 min | 33.3% |
| Total | 42 multiple choice + 6 free response | 3 hr 10 min | 100% |
| Item | 2026 and earlier | May 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice questions | 45 (30 + 15) | 42 (29 + 13) |
| Multiple choice time | 1 hr 45 min | 1 hr 40 min |
| Free response | 6 questions, 90 min | 6 questions, 90 min |
| Section weights | 50% / 50% | 50% / 50% |
| Total time | 3 hr 15 min | 3 hr 10 min |
Free Response Points
All six free response questions are scored out of 9, giving 54 raw points. Questions 1 and 2 allow a graphing calculator; questions 3 to 6 do not. BC free response sets mix AB-level topics with BC-only material such as parametric, polar and vector-valued functions and infinite series, and released exams have often placed a series question near the end. Treat that as a tendency rather than a rule, since the College Board can rearrange topics.
Calculator Rules
You need a graphing calculator only for Section I Part B and Section II Part A. Bluebook supplies a Desmos graphing calculator in those parts only, and approved handheld graphing calculators are also allowed. Everything else, including 29 multiple choice questions and four free response questions, is done by hand.
AP Calc BC Scoring Formula With Examples
On the 2027 exam each correct answer adds about 1.19 composite points, compared with about 1.11 on a 45-question test. Each free response point adds about 0.93. A 108-point total that you may see elsewhere (45 multiple choice answers times 1.2, plus 54 free response points) produces the same AP score once divided by 1.08.
Example 1: Comfortable 5 on the New Format
Half of the free response points plus about 71 percent of the multiple choice is already a 5 on the estimated BC curve. That surprises many students, and it is the main reason the share of 5s on BC is so high.
Example 2: Released Exam, Middle of the 3 Band
Reaching the 4 band at 48 takes six more composite points: about six more correct answers, or about seven more free response points. Spread over six questions, seven points is barely more than one point each.
Example 3: Just Short of Passing
Four composite points separate this student from a 3. Students in this position often gain the most by reviewing AB-level skills, since those make up the majority of the exam.
AP Calc BC Score Cutoffs (Estimated)
These ranges are the 2026 estimate, the default curve in the calculator, on a 100-point composite.
Estimated, not official. The College Board does not release AP cut scores. We start from the conversion charts printed in released AP Calculus BC exams and shift each line by a point or so per year so that the share of students above it roughly follows that year's official distribution.
| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 57 | 48 | 38 | 32 |
| 2025 | 58 | 48 | 39 | 32 |
| 2024 | 56 | 48 | 38 | 32 |
Cut points move because of equating. The College Board links each new form to earlier ones so that a given AP score reflects the same achievement, which means a tougher form gets slightly lower cuts. In 2024 the share of 5s reached 47.7 percent and our estimate for the 5 line is lowest that year; in 2025 the share fell to 44.0 percent and the estimate is a point higher.
The Calculus AB Subscore Explained
Every AP Calculus BC student receives two scores: the BC score and a Calculus AB subscore, each from 1 to 5. According to the College Board, the subscore reflects your performance on the part of the exam devoted to Calculus AB topics, which is approximately 60 percent of the exam. The College Board recommends that colleges treat the AB subscore the same way they would treat an AP Calculus AB exam score.
This calculator does not predict the subscore, on purpose. To compute it you would need to know which multiple choice questions and which free response parts count as AB content on your particular form, and the College Board does not publish that mapping or the subscore cutoffs. Calculators that show an AB subscore usually guess by reusing your full BC point totals with AB-style cutoffs, which can be badly off when a student does well on AB topics and poorly on series or polar, or the reverse. Rather than show a number we cannot defend, we leave it out.
| Subscore | Students | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 76,764 | 47.7% |
| 4 | 49,126 | 30.5% |
| 3 | 15,701 | 9.8% |
| 2 | 14,481 | 9.0% |
| 1 | 4,881 | 3.0% |
| 3 or higher | 141,591 | 88.0% |
The 2025 mean subscore was 4.11, higher than the 3.82 mean BC score that year, and 88 percent of students earned a subscore of 3 or higher compared with 78.6 percent on the BC score itself. Those are national totals, so they tell you how the group did, not what your own subscore will be.
What Is a Good AP Calculus BC Score?
A 3 is passing, and many colleges award credit for one or two semesters of calculus with a 4 or 5 on BC. Because nearly half of BC students now earn a 5, a 4 is solid but is no longer above average. In 2026, 82 percent of BC students scored 3 or higher.
Credit varies widely: some universities grant Calculus I and II for a 5, Calculus I alone for a 4, and use the AB subscore when the BC score is low. Look up the policy for each school on your list.
AP Calculus BC Score Distribution, 2022 to 2026
| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher | Mean | Test takers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 46% | 22% | 14% | 14% | 4% | 82% | Not yet listed | Not yet listed |
| 2025 | 44.0% | 21.9% | 12.8% | 15.2% | 6.2% | 78.6% | 3.82 | 160,436 |
| 2024 | 47.7% | 21.1% | 12.1% | 13.9% | 5.2% | 80.9% | 3.92 | 148,191 |
| 2023 | 43.5% | 15.9% | 19.0% | 15.2% | 6.3% | 78.5% | 3.75 | 135,458 |
| 2022 | 41.2% | 15.6% | 20.1% | 16.4% | 6.8% | 76.9% | 3.68 | 120,238 |
The College Board lists 2026 in whole percentages and had not posted a 2026 mean or test-taker count when we checked. Participation keeps growing, from about 120,000 in 2022 to more than 160,000 in 2025, and the share of 4s rose from about 16 percent to about 22 percent while the share of 3s fell. BC remains one of the AP exams with the highest share of 5s.
Raw Points Needed for a 3, 4 or 5 on AP Calc BC
Find your multiple choice result in the left column (42-question format) to see the fewest free response points, out of 54, that reach each score on the 2026 estimate.
| Multiple choice correct (of 42) | For a 3 | For a 4 | For a 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 22 of 54 | 33 of 54 | 42 of 54 |
| 20 | 15 of 54 | 26 of 54 | 36 of 54 |
| 25 | 9 of 54 | 20 of 54 | 29 of 54 |
| 30 | 2 of 54 | 13 of 54 | 23 of 54 |
| 35 | Already a 3 | 7 of 54 | 17 of 54 |
On a 45-question released exam the targets rise slightly: 30 correct out of 45 needs about 5, 16 and 26 free response points for a 3, 4 and 5. In percentage terms, a 5 takes roughly 57 percent of the total points, a 4 about 48 percent and a 3 about 38 percent.
How to Get a 5 on AP Calculus BC
- Protect the AB core. Roughly 60 percent of the exam is AB material, so limits, derivatives, integrals and differential equations must be automatic before you polish series.
- Build a series checklist: which convergence test fits which form, how to find an interval of convergence including endpoints, and how to bound error with the alternating series or Lagrange error bound.
- Practice parametric, polar and vector motion problems together, since they reuse the same ideas of speed, distance and area in different coordinates.
- Time the new multiple choice pace: 29 questions in 62 minutes is just over two minutes each without a calculator.
- Score released free response sets with the official scoring guidelines and note exactly which points you missed, such as a missing justification or an unsupported conclusion.
- Show setups before you compute. A correct integral expression earns credit even if the evaluation is wrong.
- Use calculator questions well: graph, find intersections and evaluate definite integrals on the calculator rather than by hand, and keep three decimal places.
- Rescore yourself with this calculator every few weeks and watch which section's contribution grows.
How Reliable Is This AP Calc BC Score Calculator?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board, so the composite math is exact. The cutoffs are informed estimates, because official cut scores are never published, and the actual line for any year can sit a couple of points above or below ours. The new 42-question format adds one more assumption: no 2027 form has been scored yet, so we assume the cutoffs carry over on the 100-point scale.
Grading is the biggest source of error. Students tend to give themselves justification and notation points that a reader would not. If your composite lands within three points of a cutoff, plan as if either neighboring score is possible.
AP Calculus BC Exam Date and Score Release
The College Board's exam calendar lists AP Calculus BC on Monday, May 10, 2027, in the morning session, alongside AP Calculus AB. You cannot take both calculus exams in the same year. Confirm the date and start time with your AP coordinator, since schedules can change.
Scores, including the AB subscore, appear in your College Board account in early July. The exact release date is announced each spring, so check the official schedule rather than assuming it matches last year.

Frequently asked questions
How is AP Calculus BC scored?
The multiple choice section and the free response section each count for 50 percent. Correct multiple choice answers are scaled to 50 points and free response points, out of 54, are scaled to another 50. The resulting composite out of 100 is converted to a 1 to 5 score with cut points the College Board sets each year but does not publish.
What composite score do you need for a 5 on AP Calc BC?
Our 2026 estimate puts the 5 line at about 57 out of 100, or roughly 57 percent of the available points. On the 42-question format, that could be 30 correct answers plus 23 of 54 free response points. The College Board does not publish official cut scores, so the true line can differ by a point or two.
Why do so many students get a 5 on AP Calculus BC?
BC students are a strongly prepared group, and the cut point for a 5 is set to reflect college-level mastery rather than a fixed percentage of students. With a 5 line near 57 percent of the points, many students clear it. In 2026, 46 percent earned a 5, compared with 20 percent on AP Calculus AB.
What is the AB subscore on the AP Calculus BC exam?
It is a second 1 to 5 score based on the portion of the BC exam that covers Calculus AB topics, which the College Board describes as approximately 60 percent of the exam. Colleges are encouraged to treat it like an AP Calculus AB score. In 2025, 88 percent of BC students earned an AB subscore of 3 or higher.
Does this calculator predict the AB subscore?
No. The College Board does not publish which questions count toward the AB subscore on a given form or the cutoffs it uses, so any prediction from section totals would be a guess. We show your BC score and explain the subscore instead. Nationally, subscores run higher than BC scores: the 2025 mean subscore was 4.11 against a 3.82 mean BC score.
How many multiple choice questions are on the 2027 AP Calc BC exam?
There are 42: 29 without a calculator in 62 minutes and 13 with a graphing calculator in 38 minutes. Exams through May 2026 had 45 questions. The six free response questions, the 90-minute free response time and the 50/50 section weighting did not change, and the College Board says course content is unchanged.
Is AP Calc BC harder than AB?
BC covers more material, adding series, parametric, polar and vector topics to everything in AB, so the course is harder. The exam scores do not look harder: 82 percent passed BC in 2026 versus 65 percent on AB. The students who choose BC are typically stronger, and the BC cutoffs are lower as a share of points.
Is a 4 on AP Calculus BC good?
Yes. A 4 is labeled very well qualified and earns credit at most colleges, often for Calculus I and sometimes more. Because nearly half of BC students earn a 5, a 4 is around the middle of the BC group, but it is still a strong result. Credit rules vary, so check each college's AP policy.
Can I use this calculator for older AP Calculus BC practice exams?
Yes. Choose the 2026 and earlier format, which sets multiple choice to 45 questions, the count used on released College Board exams. Free response scoring is the same in both formats. Entering an old test on the 42-question setting would overstate your multiple choice percentage and your composite.
What was the average AP Calculus BC score?
The College Board reports a mean of 3.82 in 2025 and 3.92 in 2024, among the highest averages of any AP exam. A 2026 mean had not been posted when this page was updated, but the 2026 distribution, with 46 percent 5s and 82 percent passing, points to a similar figure.
When do AP Calculus BC scores come out?
Scores are released in early July in your College Board account, a few weeks after the May exam. Your AB subscore is released at the same time. The College Board announces the exact date each spring, so check its official score release page rather than relying on the previous year's date.
